Dear Parents,

Even before your preschool child commences Prep, there are milestones that your child will greatly benefit from having achieved:

  • Knowledge of formation of letters and numbers

  • Knowledge of entry and exit points

  • Fine motor skills and finger muscles

  • Pencil control

  • An understanding that we read and write from left to right

  • Gross motor skills to enable the body to sit properly on a chair

  • Interest in learning

  • Concentration

  • Will and perseverance

  • An understanding of why it is important to learn to read and write letters and numbers

Once you meet the above milestones, your child will have a meaningful and successful start to:

  • Knowing the phonetic letter sounds

  • Writing a 3-4 letter phonetic word such as sun, hat, dog

  • Rote counting from 0-20

  • Writing numerals

Education is an opportunity.

As parents we only have the chance once, per child.

Have expectations of what you hope for. Role model your expectations by prioritising learning and the importance of an education.

A child who can concentrate and learn is an immensely happy child. It is also usually a well adjusted, confident and social child.

Make this autumn and winter your child’s time to learn and practice. Then 2024 will be the school year you want it to be — a smooth transition to your child’s educational journey.
