Between 0-3 children are accumulating impressions, between 3-6 they are classifying them.

Children 3-6 are conscious of their acquired pool of knowledge. They are keen to order, classify and consolidate what they have now learnt about the world. They repeat tasks over and over, and when confident to do so, they are excited to extend on concepts and add new knowledge and expertise. They go about their work methodically, they love to perfect their skills, and revel in the success of being able to do something well. Consciously, through repetition, they order the knowledge already in their mind, ready for future learning.

From 0-6 the child has such power to learn through the activity of the hand, knowledge which can be acquired without boredom and fatigue. Opposite to when school aged children of eleven or twelve have to begin the study in an abstract way, and have lost the real interest that belonged to the early childhood period, then it is very difficult to concentrate because they are asked to focus on something that is far removed from their present interests.

What can tutoring offer your preschool child?

At the heart of all learning for young children are the adults in their environment. From a young age, children sense purpose, and understand practice is needed. They look to adults who can help provide caring, respectful, useful guidance and experiences.

At Børn Tutoring beautiful hands-on Montessori materials are used towards this development, each piece carefully designed to incorporate a teaching purpose. 

Repetition is demonstrated and encouraged, because practice is needed again and again for the child to build life skills and dexterity, ease, confidence and joyful self-directed learning. 

It is through repetition that children develop their hand-eye coordination, fine-motor control and general practical working knowledge: From learning how to turn a lid, to pouring milk unto their cereal, from wiping a table clean to sweeping autumn leaves, buttoning their own pyjamas or closing the zip on their backpack. At this age, through a phonetic approach, children learn to read and write, building a constant love of language. Cultural learning about flora and fauna is interesting to children, hearing about other countries and people, absorbing knowledge of the natural world as well as the man made world all help a child slowly move from their immediate environment to the wider world.

Language

  • Spoken language is an important foundation for literacy.
    To develop vocabulary, sing songs and read books every day, relate family stories and learn poems.

  • Tutoring introduces letters to children at age 3-4, when the phonetic sound of each letter is practiced - using sight, touch and hearing. 
    Much equipment is available to help understand elements of language, further explore and finally develop the mechanics of reading. 
    Young children also love to learn about parts of speech: noun, verb, article, adjective, adverb etc. 

    With such opportunities, children commence reading effortlessly and independently at age 4-5.


Mathematics

  • All children have a mathematical mind; they love to reason, estimate and calculate.
    From an early age they learn through practical skills and sensorial observations, and every tutoring session involves these learning materials.

  • Children are guided to find answers to such questions, using equipment especially designed to teach and self-correct mathematical concepts, moving always from the concrete to the abstract.

    They commence with one:one correspondence, laying an understanding of quantity, then an introduction to the decimal system and finally the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. 

    Children derive a strong sense of mathematical order, and much happiness and excitement, from this guided process aided also by the concrete materials.
